Afternoon all.

I am looking at buying my first truck and was looking for some advice.
long story short I am looking into local contract to shift 12t lots of liquid fertiliser around 150k a round trip. Would like to get a rigid too keep the rego costs down

couple of questions for blokes of more experience than me.

Is there any reason I cant get a PM and take the turn table off and build (or buy) a tank to suit and mount it as a body?
what sort of price range should I be looking in for a truck for at most 600km a week?
am I better off just buying a bogie drive rigid with a tray and chucking a tank on?
How many KM is too many when buying an older jigger?

I used to drive a Isuzu 1400 with a 13sp RR and loved it. was a early 2000's model and was great to drive.

Appreciate any help any of you blokes can provide a young bloke.

Cheers.

Jacko.

Thanks swishy.

I know its a personal choice but would I be better looking at Jap or Yank truck for price and availability of spares etc being that I'm in the forgotten north?

cheers.

haven't got a massive pile to spend, but I guess I gotta try and start somewhere!

bit of hilly country and a range for 25 or so KM but the rest is a flat desert. no real hurry up the range as it too windy too go any more than 30.

a bit more background I work down at the coast where the pick up is and its flexible so instead of driving my ute id just be driving the truck.

I've done a fair bit of driving but ive just never had to deal with any of the office stuff like the insurance, rego costs, etc etc etc...

Thanks for your input B)

cheers Paul

there was a 1400 down your way with a poly slip on tank but it had 750k KM on it. Not sure if that's starting too get into the expensive amount of km club in an Isuzu though.

Do the sums more accurately as your 12t puts you in the range of a 6x4, depending on the tare of the unit.
A 6x4 could even be single drive + lift axle when returning empty.
But you may need tandem drive with locks for rough country unloading.
There's heaps of good 2nd hand 6x4 prime movers with low GCW (by today's standards) to choose from.

Check out whats being used now.....and see how its standing up to the job........the liquid seems as it would be corrosive to me...any spills may wreck the truck in short order.....Some 40 years ago we started in slurry transport....started with an 8 wheeler......nothing but trouble.....ended up replacing it with a single drive F86 and a short bogie trailer....The Volvo was bought new ,and never needed a penny spent on it.......unlike the 8 wheeler.....and when the trailer dissolved,we simply bought another and swapped the plates.
