Yes Morris, that is the big issue - the old oils allowed the dirt to be locked up in the sludge where it became relatively harmless. However put in a modern oil and the detergent starts to dissolve that sludge and releasing the nasties to do damage.

If you’re worried about sediment you can get oil galleries flushed out with a solvent, you just need to make sure you prime the system after, before you start it.

Weeell .... Back when I was throwing spanners ... We had a little trick for cleaning out some of the dirtier engines ... Usually long past their change interval ... Sometimes by mistake ... Sometimes by cost saving measures ...
This was mainly in Cummins engines ...we'd drain the oil, hot or warmish ... we'd get 40 litres of diesel and fill it back up ... Then fire it up and hold about 1000 rpm to get and keep pressure up ... Run it for a few minutes then drain and replace with new oil.
I was always amazed at what sort of sludge and crap came out of them.
