I had never heard of a "flat earther" until maybe 8 or 9 years ago and thought this bloke was joking and I just went along with the joke
I did learn some days later he was serious and thought I was on the same wave length as he was
Turns out the joke was on me

Flat earthers will have a ball with that and use it to "prove" their conspiracy theories

Flat earthers seem to vary between religious fundamentalists and people too stupid to understand basic physics ( the "I don’t get it, therefore no one else can” group) so they insert their own form of conformation bias to explain their beliefs, as you found out, they can appear as if they are joking or deadly serious. There is also a smattering of crazy people who are just conspiracy theorists.
