Flat Head

Unusual plumping on the manifold, Water cooled maybe?
24 stud alloy heads on this first one.
Must take on water through pipes under manifold. ( Marine set up maybe )
The water pump doesn't look original, looks bigger than I remember.
Probably wrong any thoughts?
21 stud alloy heads on this one, water pickup from front of heads not the center like the other one.
Again at Roklea july - 2013
Some nice side valves
sure as the sunrise

G'day Albion your right the top one is a marine engine with different w/pump and water cooled manifold to keep heat down and warm water before going into engine so it don't get a cold water shock.

Water also acts as a muffler , as it exits via the exhaust pipes.

Albion, you should have had a chat with Rodney while you were there, he'd have given you the history. LOL.
The water into the pipes does muffle the noise, but it has to go further down the exhaust pipes otherwise the motor will draw it back in at idle. The water dump pipes on my boat are nearly a foot away from the exhaust outlet on the manifold, had to keep moving them back down the pipes as the oil was getting milky.
Generally the water comes from the pick up, into an impellor pump, into the bottom of the exhaust manifold, out the top of the exhaust manifold then into the block at the lowest point, then out the heads at the highest point, on most motors you have to drill and tap the head to get the highest point. Plumbed up this way the exhaust manifold warm the water a bit before it gets to the engine, and plumbing from the bottom to top eliminated air locks.

Used to own a 48 ford 4 door sedan long long time ago but havent seen a marine flattie before.
Actually found the display Ron had there interesting but didn't get to talk to him.
Must say I found Rocklea a refreshing change and will show more pics soon. Thanks for your input guys.

The green one is the first series, 21 stud Ford V8, around 1935-36. First ones came out in 1932 and finished in 36-7.
After that they went to the centre of the heads water outlets

In the top picture you can see the different types of valves. The early ones had a mushroom stem and split guide, no adjustment, you had to take metal off the stem or sink the valve further into the head...very time consuming. From '49 to '54 the tappets were adjustable and the valves had an ordinary straight stem - remove the C clip and pull the valve, guide and spring out all together. Those later engines had an ordinary distributor you can see below the valve board, early engines had the crab dist on the front. Later engines were much easier to work on.
