Strange Crane was created by Lang
While collecting the Vic Rail photos I found this. Looking at the rams and booms it would seem unworkable.
That top arm would have to slide on the box on the tip of the bottom arm? They are serious rams and boom construction. Any Ideas

I had one of the funny cranes on a tractor once .....came from Qld Rail......they called it a "pelican",which was also the name of Toft Bros first loader.......anyhoo,the lighter jib reached over the steer axle ,sort of like a Z unfolding ......could lift about 1/2ton at 10 ft over the front, and over the back ,just enough reach to lift rail (about 3 ton)......Qld Rail also had interesting PTO driven compressors.........single cylinder about 12" bore by 3 " stroke...Holmans.........A lot of funny looking cranes on trucks and tractors were made during WW2 for the army,as the couldnt get yank cranes.

Think n I might have seen something about this type of beast
the end part of boom was hinged and it was cantilevered to multiply the main booms height
guess n with the boom all the way up it may have been straight n parrell to the main boom
and when lowered right down it may have well tuched the ground

Many many moons ago when still working in earthmoving I had acouple of weeks work at the Clyde Wagon Works in Granville Sydney. They had an old steam operated crane running around the yard on rails and had a vertical boiler to save space and looked bloody old when I saw it but still earnt its keep.

Great stuff Swishy

As I suspected the bottom arm slides on the box.

Only the poms could come up with this complicated and very limited range lifting machine. Unbelievable that it can only lift 2 ton (40cwt) with all that superstructure. Suppose it was one of the early cross country cranes not tractor based but not a patch on the American and European slewing cross-country cranes of the same era.
