I have heard of the petrol soaked rag over the inlet manifold of a diesel
Always worried about the rag getting sucked in and creating more problems
I had the air cleaner duckbill off the D7 once, old 3T so only revs at 850 - 900 RPM at full throttle
It was quite scary to see that something so slow reving but big capacity could draw that much air at idle
It was a huge volume of air
Sorry off topic

I had an expert machinery fella demonstrate the petrol tag on several old bangers, but his win rate was only about 50%. My old inter only needed a short sniff, and maybe about 3 or 4 seconds later she was purring. Another old time fix I was told of was borax. Take the inlet manifold off, get her ticking over and sprinkle the borax into the intake, it will freshen or deg laze the bore free the rings improve compression. In turn improve starting.
As you have found just cranking won't start her unless well warmed.

Sarge, I remember an old trick to deglaze cylinders was to sprinkle Bon Ami (don't know if it still survives) into the air intake with the motor running. Lang, I have several J I Case collector tractors from the 60's and early 70's with the Lanova indirect injection system and the heat gun works.

Saw the Bon Ami trick used on a Falcon at Bathurst years ago, around the Moffat years. Flagged off for smoke, into the pits, Bon Ami down the intake, instant de-glaze and back out onto the track. All good, at least for the day.

Not sure if Bon Ami is still available cause shopping is Dee's department not mine. But there are similar products and if I'm going to be arm pit deep in grease n shit I use it at clean me up stage to remove the bulk if not most of the crap off me.

I was told of the "Jif hone" by a mate who said it was successful on a glazed up early Patrol.

Never knew they had battery heat guns, I would have thought that it would drain the battery very quickly - but if it did not start in that time it was not going to start anyhow.
If the Landcruiser gloplugs don't work I will look at it. Unfortunately all my battery stuff is Hitachi and I don't want to start down the slippery multi hundred dollar slope of changing my breed of tools. Maybe Hitachi (they call them something else now) has a heat gun.
Thanks for the info.
