Yes. They started back in the 20's. Well into operation by WW2. I suspect this one has a Continental motor. When I have time I will have a bit of a look.
A 1924 Clark and a 1926 Yale
Nearly 500 Ross 19HT forklift trucks were passed to the RAF under lend lease, where they were used for a wide variety of airfield tasks, from stores to aircraft crash recovery and bomb loading duties. This one was delivered to and used at Marchwood Military Port, passing into US Navy hands post war (when they took the port over as a NATO base). The Ross 19HT was the standard medium-lift US Army forklift of the war and was widely used on all bases, including, in all likelihood, Duxford.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Wow, on these, you press the leaver down to go down. I wonder why forklift manufacturers decided to reverse the valve block or whatever so you have to move the leaver up to go down and vice-versa?

Duals on the drive would help with floatation on soft ground but the steer wheels will sink a bit.
on all forklifts I drove the lift lever was always pull back to lift n push forward to lower. Moved many of them about to fit new tyres on them.
Hyster also used the Continental engines.
