vacuum hose can be improvised by taking a piece of garden hose and poking air duster nozzle into side of it and then pointing out direction. Venturi effect will create suction at other end.

If you do chop the tank end off, just remember to dangle a air hose in there and leave running to displace the fumes

It would be so nice to just blow it out with compressed air. But that doesn't work because of the long filler tubes that stick way down inside the rank. It might spit a bit our but the most of it just goes around inside. Pics coming up on these filler tubes n inside the tank. Yes I have a wet n dry vacuum cleaner I will use to lift up what I can then the old venturi system of compressed air n garden hose which hangs on the wall. Yes, degassing fuel tanks is very important.

Fuel tank is filthy inside the front section n clean in the rear one. These are the best shots so far of looking down these frigging filler tubes. Rocker cover is off n cleaned and the cork type gasket is undamaged. Started cleaning up the oily mess on the engine n cover.
Question.
What is the best material to make a rocker cover gasket out of n do you use a sealant n if so what type? Yes 3 questions really.

Re: Gasket.

Nitrile sheet.   eg 3mm thick.
www.actfoam.com.au/products/nitrile-shee...200mm-wide-per-metre ?

Or clean both surfaces.
Coat with liberal amount of Permatex Ultra Black gasket maker.
Place a tip of a 3 or 1.5 mm tile spacer  just into the goo on 4 corners.
lower the rocker cover on and finger tighten nuts to squeeze the goo just out just a little bit. (so you know, it the metal surface has made contact and sealed)

Let it set for a day or two.

remove the tile spaces.
nip up a little more
should never leak.

Hi,

for most gaskets I use Threebond Grey. It seals well but you can remove the item and the gasket doesn't get torn apart. As suggested in the previous post, use enough to hold it in place or a thin smear if the surface is pitted.

My 20 cents worth of bad advise that works well for me

Just normal Permatex aviation type sealant

But more importantly is making sure that tin surfaces like rocker covers and sumps are perfectly flat and square they are meant to be
And do them up a poofteenth more than finger tight

Most of these types of covers are stuffed from people just nipping them up a bit
All well intentioned but usually stuff the surface
a bit of time gently massaging them back to square and flat

Even though the existing gasket is undamaged its soaked in oil n diesel from me starting to clean it up. I always wash the metal surfaces with thinners n a clean rag. Was also going to wash the old gasket with thinners. Looked around n found Autobarn has just what I need 800x250x3 for just $22.99. So I've ordered that in.
I've have Permatex sealant n will use that to bond the gasket to the head as this stuff usually hangs on. But will use the permatex black gasket maker on the top side. Last time I had this cover off I ran a straight edge along the 4 sides. The short ones were fine but one of the long sides needed a dressing down. Will check again when it's time.

You can do a check to find out if the rocker cover is warped . Sit it on a piece of flat glass or something flat and see if the cover wobbles .

I've had success with the Permatex aviation sealant, downside is, it's messy and is difficult to remove the excess from your fingers. It's a great thread sealant too. The small plastic bottles with the little brush attached to the screw on cap , are very easy to knock over, it spills out and makes a big gooey mess, done it many times and lost about a whole bottle . (Swearing ensued of course)
