The Cocky..
By Rick Hayman Aka Chocs
As a 'cocky' woke, another day.
Straight to the window he would stray.
His hardened gaze upon his land,
Would this day go just as planned?
He's seen before, the dry times here,
The look above was all too clear.
Many times he'd cursed the dry,
Why bother, why even try?
He pulled on his boots, and wandered out,
He saw nothing, but dust and drought.
He'd dry sown seed and prayed for rain,
Another gamble, he'd chanced again.
The rains would come and just in time,
With spring time here, the crops looked fine.
An inch or two is all he'd need,
To fill the heads with grade one seed.
A lucky break had eased the debt,
The drought still here, not over yet.
It's hard to say which way to go,
Try crop again? It's hard to know.
There's been some change in forty years
We've won and lost and faced our fears.
Seen farms sold up and flooded out,
Land burnt and parched with drought.
Bloody hard yard, this farming game
Never a day, or week the same.
One thing's for sure and you can bet

And one from me from '93 ...
TIME PASSES ON
by Bugly
Under the trees just out of town stood a one-roomed iron shack.
Across the front a veranda sagged

Good on you Chocs, thanks for that, have had five inches for the year , the four and half mils last night has moved the outlook from not a lot to something, it's a bit short for hay. Cheers, David.

Good on ya Chocs and Bugly, you put the words together real well. The best way to get some rain is to cut some hay; never fails to work. Cheers
