Hi i would like ask the EXBERTS out there : Why my 1948 Astor Radiogram plays my 78's , 45's & 33 1/3 records at top volume but when it comes to the radio part it comes out softy even with volume turn up full blast........I NEED HELP .DAVE

Have you checked there's no dust in behind the volume controls???? I used to have problems with the volume controls getting dust into them - a little squirt of CRC CO Contact Cleaner should do the trick!

If you are in Perth I will fix it for you.

In simple terms the amplifier has two inputs - one for the turntable and one for the tuner. In your case, the output from the tuner is low thus giving you low volume. Old valve tuners and amplifiers often exhibited low output which can be caused by low emission valves, leaky paper capacitors (called condensers in the old days) or bias resistors that have gone high in value.

Most likely it will be a valve such as the Rf amplifier 6J8G or IF valve 6U7G. The circuit shown at the attached link is typical

Looks as though I won't be fixing it for him then - he will probably be able to fix it himself by changing valves as per my previous post :)
