Diamond T steering box

Giddday, After my leads for a replacement Ross steering box all fell through I bit the bullet and took it to a recommended engineer shop. I should of done this in the first place.
It needed the sector shaft straightening, machining and rechrome and new bushes and seals. All these parts were common parts and readily available(and only a 2 week turnaround).
The question now is what lubricant do I use. Originally it had what looks like a grease/oil mixture. It had the consistency of yoghurt.
Do I need to mix this or do I use a light grease?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
David

Try some molybdenum grease with the oil.

You can still get self-levelling grease from BP, I use it in the little Ross boxes in the Studes. Seems to work alright, although it seems a little light.

You can also buy very heavy worm gear oil. We use up to 600W at work in old lift gearboxes.

ASW.

Thanks fellas. Will get down and dirty over chrissy break(too busy at the min-you all should relate).

ASW the bearings and races were still good so the shop found out after measuring that bushes and seal were standard stock off the shelf items.

Anyone know of anyone in or around Sydney who make up drag links.

Try either; www.hydrosteer.com.au/

or; www.allpowersteering.com.au/

They'll make one up for, & they would both have agents/stockists in Sydney.

Re Ross s/box

Hard-chrome is porous so picks up the oil, depending on the bush material either sintered (porous) the other one I can not remember phosphor bronze I think will be grooved to allow oil to get to the bearing surface,

main thing no grease, or moly,

EP Gear oil,

no grooves in the bush thinest oil you can find, (there are thin gear oils made these days)

cheers
