Hey Fellas... We're hijacking Geoff's thread on ELECTROLYTIC rust removal, but it could be for the better.. The molasses method works much better on really bad rust, & is a whole lot safer... Remember, water & electricity don't mix...!

I use citric acid to remove rust, on the shelf at the supermarket and cheap, Like me! Got the idea from old mate over on the west coast, thanks OneTrack. The molassis would be better with large items in big drums. How much is a couple of litres in bulk? Cheers Ross

southbound nothing wrong with that but the concetration you get it in is nothing (id drink that useless crap) you need proofed concentrate (phosphorus in chemist 1200 proof strength)
caution using it as it will dissolve your hand in 5 minutes :)

Even vinegar will work if you leave it in there long enough... It's only an acid after all ! Same as the old one about putting metal in Cola.. it's all Acidic ! So imagine what Cola does to your guts :o...
Imagine also what breathing the fumes from 1200 proof phosphoric acid would do to your lungs... :'(
Now we ARE getting REALLY dangerous...
Molasses is much safer, bio-degradable & won't eat your hand off in 5 minutes if it accidently splashes onto you + you can also make it into some bitchin moonshine ;D

I have been hijacked and yes for the better after 4or5 days trying with electrolysis and at best a 70% success all the really hard bits were left lve moved to molasses the rims just fit into a plastic 205 lt drum I chopped the top off so I will do most of the rims at once and just learn some patience. a friend told me that it is very harsh on cast material so I have to keep a close eye on it thanks all

Just be careful, if they are riveted rims, pull them out every day to check the rivets. If they are welded, go for broke!

Swishy, which lead does the Magna welding rod go on?
The Anode or the cathode?

Maybe that is why Mammoth's block has taken so long?
Might have had the polarity wrong.

Ok then... Seeing's how we've successfully hijacked this most excellent thread, I thought I'd fire one more volley for the molasses Army. ;D I have a couple of headlight buckets in 'The Tank' now.. This is the 'Tank' (25L bucket with lid)
[IMG

These are the headlight buckets I put in a few days ago... (less reflectors of course)
[IMG

Now, with all this good Vs bad rust removal talk happening today, I decided to go & have a look @ how they were going

Now.... This is after only 3 days in 'The Tank'... No sanding, no grinding, no wire brushing... No effort on my behalf except for wiring them up, putting them into the tank & waiting. Can anyone see shiny metal?
Is this where I say "I rest my case"?
;D
