Whats the two bits on the end of the spindle....looks like weld spots ....my other comment is the stud holes are already elongated and damaged ,and I would be looking out for a spare axle or hub.......in fact ,I would be looking out for a AB130 or C1300 back axle ,and do a swap.

Well observed there John!!!
Well, when I was still new to my truck and had it just for the first year (I learned driving in it), a not so clever mechanic worked on the brakes, and did the hubs up too tight. That resulted with the bearings running so hot that one completely melted onto the axle a week after leaving his workshop!
I had to send the whole thing away to get machined. And those marks left are a reminder of that incident.
They have no influence on the bearings now and it's been running alright...
I could not take the mechanic to court, as I had no receipt yet from him (I had paid 80% of the bill when I picked it up). the mechanic denied have ever seen me or laid hands on my vehicle.
Could have easily had a massive accident and just happy no one got injured... ...as I just came out of a double 90° S-bend 200m earlier...
I may not be religious, but I like to believe there's a Hell for bad mechanics!!! (they share with the bad dentists!!!)

John
My OKA has Dana 60 in the front and Dana 70 at the back. No cones, just straight bolts like the Army jeep or WW2 Dodge.

John, regarding a swap over, is that an easy bolt off/ bolt on ( and new CV joints ) or do there need to be any modifications?
And which of the two slides would be the preferred choice? Locking hubs might be a consideration when I'm on dirt tracks (it goes many places)...?
I'm mainly working by myself in the driveway of our workshop space... I can get people to lend a hand if needed though...
And I can pick the rear up with a big chain block attached to overhead I-beam (I'm a Rigger )
Also Are the wheels the same size? Excuse my ignorance on my part...
As i got only three working gears (first hardly gets used...) I was wondering which diff ratio be the best so I'm not revving the **** out on the highway

Sorry, I think what you are looking at its not welds, with grease-oil mash up sitting thick on the end there.
But It has been machined - I'll take a photo now .
I think you're right though... To keep it going I need another axle altogether. One of my brake drums is getting a bit too thin, having also been either cast or machined Elliptically !!!
The fun never stops...
And This is my daily and only drive....

Here's the photo of the axle housing which had to get machined, and of the elliptically machined/ cast brake drum.
The Condition of it, next to that it was overmachined by the brake specialist I used to take them to, as had me worried for a long time, resulting in me restricting the amount of driving I do with it... ("it is but waferthin"...)
A replacement axle would increase the life span and capability of the truck considerably!!!
Next to not worrying myself silly on long steep downhill sections (Dorrigo Mountain or the drop down behind Tamworth)
Thanks again for all the help and advice!!!

My inner flange oil seals have not been a problem at all, I never had any leaks in the 26 years I've had this CM1200.

Cheers Lang !
Axle housing is still good and oil seal sealed perfectly upon inspection (been about 4 years at least since I last did bearings n brakes).
Just need brake shoes re-padded, and seriously looking for another axle - AB130 or C1300 John said - to replace this one in the not too distant future...
Thanks for the advice.

Brake drums have always been a problem with smaller IHs....when the trucks were new, drums cost hundreds of dollars each, and good used ones were gold.......If you check out this forum ,owners here have spent lots dollars having drums built up with metalspray..The 1200 with the Dana axle is quite a rare truck......most buyers preferred a 1100 with four wheel discs ,or a 1300 with much heavier components and load capacity.

Is the C1300 always dual wheel?
I know of a guy in VIC who just dropped out his C 1100 rear axle, and has been keeping it in case I want it....
Also in contact with a chap in SA who has a whole rear axle of a C1200 he would let me have for$ 200 + freight, but he said the drums are ' on the limit'...
No one of the brake specialists I've been to has been able to advise me regarding building up old drums or recasting new ones...
But Maybe a heavier 1300 if it's not too much of a hassle swapping over?...
I never hear of metal spray...
