Joey Box Question was created by ianoz
John Ford Asked me to see if he could get some info on a Joey box's Dana Spicer 5831
3000-18-7 bad internet here can you checkout what the over drive is and how strong they are please
it' was behind a 390 V8 Dodge
He is thinking about putting it in the Acco they just bought with 240 HP cummins and Auto box . Or possibly behind the 4 speed in his Ford F350 .

Came in several variations of ratio, IF you can get someone to hook onto the web for you, try "Spicer 5831"
I gleaned these, 5831A 1.54:1-1.00:1-0.73:1
5831B 2.35:1-1.00:1- 0.85:1
5831C 1.27:1-1.00:1- 0.85:1
There are also a "D" and an "F" series, but don't know the ratios. They are getting on a bit now, Chevy and GMC used them way back when. If it's in any reasonable condition, keep it alive! Getting hard to get hold of now. If your mate's running something like a Ford NP435 main box, they are the perfect compliment, especially if it is one of the close ratio versions. I have been also keeping my eye out for one for some time now.
Cheers, Dave 64

P.S.
If it came from behind the 390 Dodge truck motor, they were apparently quite a torque machine. Blokes in the states are sticking them behind 6BT turbo Cummins, GM 4-71's etc. They were able to withstand a fair bit, as you can imagine multiplying engine torque with lower gears in the main box. Like all those Spicer auxillaries, you just have to treat them with a bit of respect, especially as you may have trouble getting some parts for them!
Cheers, Dave

While on the subject I have a Dana joey with the following numbers;
Serial: SC 265V
BM: 300602 - 1
Model: 7231 D
What is it? There are two operating rods at the top.

Thanks. Not much on the overdrive side - how would it go turned around to double the speed (we are talking old 30 mph jiggers here)?

Mamoth, my mate with the 1956 Austin Motor home has got a 3 speed joey in back to front to give it some legs and works fine. I think the engine revs are still up a bit to maintain a reasonable highway speed, but it will run all day at 90 + kph.
