903 cummins problems was created by
Hi,
I have a few problems with my 903 in my acco, it is staving for fuel and am wondering if there are any tricks to bleed it. I see there is a bleed plug on pump is that all there is? I have check the fuel line from filter back to tank and tomorrow will check the line from tank to pump. I have been told that there could be a gauze near the pump. Any suggestions to check. I have loaded up already for a show this weekend so need to fix quick. Glad problem started at home though.
Cheers
Paul

Been that long since I have been around a 903.
Does it show signs straight away or after running for awhile.
What do they have for a lift pump? if anything like some other Cummins there maybe a screen/gauze filter in the pump inlet.
Any signs of leaks along the fuel line?, if it can leak fuel it can suck air into the system.
What does the fuel tank have for a breather? Not blocked?
How new are your fuel filters?

no lift pump, new filter today. every time I took it off the fuel was down 1 to 2 inches, topped up and refitted. Breather clear, fuel line from tank tank to filter clear. has fuel put more in. Will check line from filter to pump in morning when cab tilted. Motor would idle normal for only about 5 seconds then hunt like made and sound like a chaff cutter and plumes of smoke. Tried to bleed at pump, opened the 1/4" bung to bleed but there is also a large slotted screw which I could not move tonight which maybe the correct bleed screw to use.
Any other thoughts? Has to be something simple. Will check the 2 fuel lines for signs of holes but no visible fuel leaks so seems to be partial blockage somewhere.
Never had a problem though only owned it for couple months.

G'day pd2 .. i hope you get her sorted without too much drama mate.
...had a similar problem on one of the dealer repaints a few years ago...a 2238 Benz from memory. It ended up being a rag in the fuel tank :...
...it would drop off the pickup when not running, then block the pickup after a couple of minutes running!....what a PIA

Most Cummins motors, 903's included will be slow to come back in the revs when they are low on fuel, fuel blockage or sucking air.
Take the pick up line off and put it straight into a bucket of diesel, that will tell you if there is an obstruction in the pick up in the tank.
If you don't find your problem there make sure the pick up line is clear, would be odd for it to be blocked though.
Sounds like you've already checked the filter.
Once you've ruled out the pick up in the tank, the pick up line and the filter, that only leaves the pump. They are pretty robust and don't often give much trouble.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the comments, going to shed with spanners in hand.
Well if 3070's had come out with a GM I would have bought one!
Will let you all know the outcome.
Cheers

Hey Paul, I just cut up a 3070 that had an 8V92N in it earlier in the week.
Can't go wrong with a 903 anyway.
They make just as much noise as a GM and sound as good.
They usually leak as much oil as a GM out of the valley covers.
And they use as much fuel as a GM.
