G'day Syd great looking little rocket you got there, the old man always used to swear by fitting a 300 beddy stromberg to his 281 reckons he used to get a bit more power and seemed to hang on a bit better than standard, just had to mod the linkage slightly

Hi trucksyd are you using flux core wire in your welder as it can be a little tricky to use as I've learnt replacing the floor pans in my AT4 top job mate keep us posted with your progress cheers Bryant ;)

Hi Syd, Indianman might be onto something there. It reminds me the 281 Inters do have a smaller throat than would be expected (only 1 3/32" IIRC) same as 161 Holden? Probably jetted bigger. I figured it was because they don't rev much past 3,000, where as the Holden will go well past 4,000.
I did fit a late 202 carby to one to get it going, 1 11/32" ?
Bolt/flange size the same, but had to drill out the holes in the carby. I only did it to get it running, never had the throttle hooked up because it's on the wrong side and cable-operated. It did idle much better than a correct one I got later (no matter what I did to it, maybe vapourized better?)

So a Stromberg with a bigger throat may indeed go better (might need to grind the manifold throat out as well).

There are many variants of that carby and you can get adjustable main jets for them.

Cheers.

Hi Syd, AS120 is spot on with that Holley problem, they used that carb with a different base plate on the Flathead Ford motors 1949-1954. The problems he states are correct, I have a 1950 Ford and vapour lock/flat spot are real issues, and they are renowned for power valve problems. Using PULP helps a lot, the10% Ethanol fuels are a pig.

hi spinner, thats no good as i noticed the dual throat on the holley & thought it would go straight on , i,ll have to try something different to add more grunt to the old 281,at the moment i have the timing & carb tuned nice so it keeps up with traffic....

G'day Syd yep single barrel Stromberg off a 300 beddy will be talking to the old boy tonight so will ask him what he remembers of the fitment but I think from memory the base plate is the same but throttle linkage a bit ( read minor change ) different, the orig inter air cleaner ( dry element ) also fits.
