I'd rather have tools that I don't need, than not have the tools I do need.

In the time I’ve had my ute it has never idled properly so I’ve been over the carby and the intake manifold a few times, tried two other carbys, replaced all of the engines ignition parts and even made up new copper HT leads but to no avail. I was looking at the intake manifold from my spare engine and noticed a copper tube in it.
Then upon dismantling the manifolds found a tin sheet between them to block off the exhaust gas.

The intake throat in the manifold has no parent bore and a steel sleeve in it, I presume it was easier to cast the manifold that way or maybe it’s for quicker warm up in cold climates, whatever, it had a hole in it and I’ve finally found the problem.
So I turned up a sleeve, pressed it in and now it idles nicely.

Nice to find the cause and be able to repair.
Uncle reckoned when you lift a bonnet there should be a red arrow pointing to the problem.

Hi.
my understanding of the shared inlet and outlet cast manifolds is it allows the heat from the exhaust to keep the inlet warm to prevent the air fuel mixture from forming droplets on the sidewalls as it makes its way to the cylinder head, keeping the mixture even and airbourne. On BMC A Series you can notice a definite lag, measured in seconds, on really cold evenings if you replace the exhaust manifold and just use the cast inlet with no heating.

Good job finding that issue
There was someone on the forum many years ago who must of had a similar issue on a inline type of motor
That was the first I had ever heard about the heat from the exhaust keeping the air/fuel vapor in the correct state for the further away cylinders
Good to finally find the problem and better yet, to fix the issue
Paul

The old Holden grey motor had a butterfly below the inlet for this reason. Originally it was spring loaded. All of that lasted 12 months at best then the spring lost its tension n the butterfly rusted in place.
I like the idea of a red arrow pointing to the problem. I could do with one for my David Brown tractor. It's miss firing again only this time I'm thinking sticky valve/s.
