When returning from a little run along the Murray I noticed the bus was puffing quite a bit of black "soot". The air cleaner element is quite new and is clean.
On closer inspection the outer drivers side tyre, which is directly behind the exhaust outlet, was covered in an oily residue. It is sticky and very black (and very hard to remove from a little white dog).
A mate suggested that maybe the seal in the turbo could be the problem.
I would appreciate your thoughts.
I would expect nothing worse than worn pistons rings and liners.....a lot of engines also rely on effective valve stem seals.and its advisable to install new seals first ,as that is the cheapest thing you can do to stop oil...........next easiest is to check the turbo by removing the hoses and exhaust and see if its passing oil...................of course a big leak on the compressor side of the turbo can result in a runaway engine........a big leak on the exhaust turbine seal will make a smokescreen if it gets bad.

park truck on hill, engine off, engine stopper out, 1st gear, release park brake if the truck is held on compression
try 2nd gear................ 3rd gear.. etc

Thanks for your help. It just seems to have come on very quickly. Has been going very well since I put the motor in about 25ooo kms ago then all of a sudden start seeing bloke coming from the exhaust.
She has always puffed a bit of smoke when first started for the day so valve stem seals are something I have wanted to look at for some time. Is this something that I may be able to handle myself?
Will hopefully get to take some hoses off this weekend and report back.
I believe it is a Garrett, although I will check.
Its a slimy black residue rather than oil as such.
I will drain the tanks, usually there is some dirty greyish sh1t that comes out when I do.
I will start pulling things apart at the weekend hopefully and let you know.
I'll have to find some hills. Not a lot of them around here. When I did my licence test in Shepparton I had to drive the truck to Bendigo to do an uphill and downhill start.
So, the higher the gear it holds in the better the compression or have I got it back the front?
