Hi guys, hoping someone can assist. I was under the truck yesterday and noticed someone has welded a bit flat bar on the bottom edge of the front brake backing plates, and welded to this flat bar are 2 chain links about 6" apart. All the links show wear as if another link or wire rope was attached and maybe stretched between to 2 wheels. Any idea what these where for?

I’ll second that. We had these fitted to the first batch of ghosts.

Someone here will give a better explanation, but basically way back in the days before power steering, shur-guides were fitted across the steering to assist control on rough roads, on narrow Oz roads, as even today, drop the near side (passenger) side steer tyres off onto the dirt and she would head for the scrub. On a cab over especially, at least gave you some sort of control. Yank idea from memory, Swishy’s photo sort of tells the story. Once power steering became the norm, went out of vogue. Personally thought they were a good idea, at the time. Overnite may be able to give you his opinion.

You want dangerous...drive a Franna Crane........if you hit a high kerb, the crane jacknifes into the kerb, and climbs it........and if you bounce on a big pothole at 100ks,where you land is a big gamble...........a truck automatically goes straight ahead, with a Franna ,the tendency is to jacknife and flip over.

Could not have explained it much better myself . Before they fitted ShurGuides to the early ghosts, you almost had your arms ripped out of their sockets trying to back on the bitumen after you dropped the LH steer in the dirt.
