Man up and go the Armstrong route. We have all driven without power for many years and have just become spoilt.

I gotta say I was a little surprised that you can't get CV joint steering shaft parts off the shelf, or can you ??
Well a few seconds Googling and I'm gunna say you can get these CV joints with the D type doohickie already made in them
And even more stuff with CV joints for the steering shaft
www.ntnglobal.com/en/news/new_products/news20041209.html
Seams to be no end to what you can buy
Anyway, this may or may not be of some help

Years ago, in the late 80's, I did 3 trips to Brisbane in a R model with no power steering, two things I remember, first it was probably the best steering truck I have ever driven, second there was no chance of turning the wheel until you were moving but you very quickly learned to love it. I have 3 ford tractors that I use for making Hay now, but in early days use for everything with no power steering. It's a Mighty Boy if you are in a tight spot pick the front up and carrier it around.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

I don't know about Mightyboys but when Morris and Austin Minis were all the rage and many had a chromed nerf bar (It may have stopped cats and dogs from damaging the car but would be useless against anything bigger) I used to say that the bar was a handle so that you could carry the car inside with you and upstairs if you lived in a two-storey house!
Morris.

Thanks Paul I had never seen one. I'll need to do a bit more searching for a CV with the right spline count, diameter and a different spline count and diameter the other end.
Should be a piece of cake?
Let the fun begin, but Armstrong steering is looking good.

After too long I got my hands on another Nissan steering column and after a bit of a struggle getting the uni-joints rearranged it all went together, so now the Boy can use some muscles to steer the little car.
I fitted the column this morning and thought why not put the engine in.
After about 4 hours it was bolted in and pretty much all the wiring is back on it.
I made a new serpentine belt run for the waterpump after deleting the power steering pump and now it's in I think a slightly shorter belt would go astray. The tensioner is almost at maximum belt length and I think 20-25mm shorter would be a good idea.
I have the wiring for the alternator stuck behind the inlet manifold but I don't think it will be too hard to extract and hook up.
Hopefully I'll get it running by the weekend. Just need to get more shed time.
It's a crowded engine bay.
