Morrie m80PDU,
You certainly are up for a difficult and complicated job.
I am having enough trouble just restoring to original, a 1960 Morris WE three tonner. All that is left now (I hope) is stopping oil leaking from the oil filter on startup. I have taken the filter off at least ten times, taken the casting that bolts to the block and that the filter attaches to, off at least three times and replaced the filter once and the gasket three times. Taken the pressure relief (The manual calls it release) valve out twice, had to buy a complete filter to get a fourth gasket (Ryco would not sell a gasket separately) and hope that will solve the problem. An O-ring did not.
I have had a Marine Engineer and an Ex-British Leyland motor mechanic try to fix it.
This problem has taken away all my enthusiasm for the project and it will now have to wait for the weather to warm up a little.

Morris, do you know the exact source of the leak? If I have trouble pin pointing a leak I wash the area first then cover with talcum powder, after a trial run the leak is easy to find.

Dunno the answer
Had my D7 always pumping out of the fuel filter housing
The Princesses glass chopping board and some fine emery paper glued to it, then a few hours of figure 8 action until it was flat and put it back together and was never a issue again
Paul

this is a pretty common issue on V8 hemis that aren't used often, as in Dodge farm trucksPDU,

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Thanks for all the ideas, folks. Maybe I should have started a new thread?
My engineer mate says that these gaskets have to be twisted as you insert them or they will roll and cause the gasket to fail. That is definitely what happened to the one I fitted. An O ring he fitted also let oil through.
SWISHY,
Thankx for the tax free advice:-
1. Vertical, with bolt up through centre of cartridge
2. Rubber, square section about 1 or 2mm thick and about 100 millimetres diameter
3. No mention at all
4. Will try
5. yes, both surfaces
Southbound,
Yes, definitely from the gasket.
MrsMackPaul,
Rubber gasket is fitted into recess in casting but it looks OK.

Morris, is it possible the pressure relief valve is stuck closed, giving too much pressure and blowing the gasket?

When the cartridge is removed, 1) are there any inprints on either side of the gasket? (suggesting that it's not sealing evenly) and 2) does the gasket show even compression all over?

I've found at times that these tin canister type filter housings get knocked out of round slightly and the lip sits up on the edge of the mounting slightly, giving uneven pressure on the gasket.
Just check the can for out of round. Just a thought.

Yesterday I spent at least an hour typing a reply to all the helpful hints I have received on this thread and it all disappeared. The message I got, and I will put it in same case I received it in, just incase that helps anybody:- Stop Code KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE
I do not what it means but somebody might. I had as far as the word "failure" again today and it disappeared again. This time I think I felt my finger hit the CTRL key while I was hitting Shift, so it is probably all my fault.
I did not have time to do it all again yesterday because I had a Doctor's appointment. Bad news there but I have had virtually a dream run for almost eighty years, so I suppose it is my turn to have health problems.
Back to the message:-
Thank You Terry or whoever put this into it's own thread. Maybe it was Swishy?
Southbound,
The pressure relief valve is definitely not stuck. We have had it out several times and wire buffed it etc.

Gasket is a square-section rubber ring about 1mm thick and about 100mm diameter. First and second gaskets showed twisting or rolling. Third attempt was an O-ring fitted by a mechanic. It shows no marks but it did not stop the oil.
wee-allis
My engineer mate has carefully checked the cannister for roundness and that it fits into the groove and onto the gasket properly.
Further attempts, when the weather gets a bit warmer and I can get enthusiastic again, will be done on the bench and checked carefully for fit. In hindsight, maybe I should have left the darned thing alone, although I do not know how long the filter had been there or how good the oil was. The leak was not there before I had the head done up.
