For future tests on the oil leak I would mark both cannister n housing where the oil leaks from. Then next fitments rotate cannister to opposite side n check the result. If it leaks from the mark on the cannister again there is an issue with, maybe tiny split. If leaks from same place on housing look closer at it.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

Thanks Swishy and jon_d,
I do not appear to have MS word and do not know which other things are word processor files.
I have tried (three times) typing something into emails but cannot get it to Control V and control C into the forum. I do not know what else to try.
Good idea Cobbadog, I will try that when the weather warms up a little and my health stabilises.

Just a thought, is the filter element too long? Maybe after 60 odd years, and decrease in demand, the filter supplier has decided a "one size fits all", even if it doesn't quite fit.
Probably very unlikely, but it was just a thought i had.
Brett.

I think (hope) I have got the forum stuff sorted out now. The oil filter problem may go away with a lot of luck as well.

EUREKA,
I believe I have stopped the leak!!
I bought a new filter for about $40 because Ryco will not sell the gaskets separately.
My engineer mate fitted the larger of the two supplied gaskets on the bench and checked the housing very carefully for fit. He fitted the housing without the cartridge and it was OK. He fitted the filter cartridge and when I started the engine IT DID NOT LEAK.
All I can think of is that incorrect gaskets were supplied with the first filter I bought!
Thank you everybody who offered suggestions, most of which I tried.
