International ASW120 blown water nipple. was created by asw120
Hi all. While driving the ASW the other week, I heard the familiar sound of a burst radiator hose. BSSSHHHHTTT!
If you've heard it, you know what it sounds like. Complete with orange steam!
I was only a couple of K's from home, Inter's are tough, the engine's really tired anyway and I was far too lazy to pull over and wait for a tow home. It did keep running for a few seconds after I switched the ignition off........
I let it cool down. and went back to it later. Having recently replaced the top hose, I expected the bottom had gone. Upon checking, I saw it was the bypass....then the reality hit me of what it actually was - the nipple had rusted off flush with the head.
Not good. I ordered a new hose and nipple from Mike Calcutt. While I was waiting, I attacked the remains with a carbide burr and a rat-tail file.
Obviously, this is "in-progress". I exposed the thread all around (I hoped), but couldn't pick it out. Needing them anyway, I ordered a set of NPT taps (I thought it would be BSP, but it isn't.)
I couldn't get the 3/8 tap to start, so luckily, the 1/4 is the same TPI, so I used it first.
To be continued...
Jarrod.

The 3/8 still wouldn't start, so I had to think - 5/8 UNF is 18 TPI, so I ran that right through.
Now the 3/8 would start. I set the verniers about half way down the nipple and place them on the tap to see how far to put it in.
About this far....
New genuine hose:
In my haste and running out of daylight, I forgot to take an "assembled" picture. Filled with water, started up and runs like before, but with a couple of noisy tappets that I don't remember it having before. Next weekend will tell if I've overheated it badly enough to blow the head gasket, but it seems OK now.

Good job, hopefully no permanent damage was done
I have had similar things happen with a 4.1 Falcon motor
I would fix one rusted of part to have another fail only weeks later
I'm thinking, in hind sight I should of just changed them all when the first one failed but I was to bigger tight ass
Im trying to remember what the others were for apart from the heater
To long ago now
You done well Jarrod

Paul, Jarrod, I am that sort of tightarse too, but old bloke who understood how tight persuaded me to at least use green water (corrosion inhibitor) even if I did nothing else. I can’t tell if it is saving my engines but had no leakages or failures since I went green about maybe 10 years ago. Fingers crossed Jarrod.

Sarge, you would think after spending so much money getting the radiator re-cored, I would have done that.
Equal parts lazy and tight....and forgetful - I meant to do the back welch plug before I dropped the cab on. THAT one will come back to bite me one day.

Inhibitors.... pffft.
I lost the water in a Commodore once. (my fault). Just filled with water and said s
he'll be right.... no Holden tablets added.
In 3 months, I was replacing the radiator. grrrr. Learnt my lesson !!!
A bit like the story of an employee who made a mistake and cost the company a million bucks. His nemesis wen to the bosses and pushed to have him fired. The response was, why should we? We just spent a million training him.
