I just look up the torque spec for that size bolt.

as Jay rod sez, just look up a torque spec for that size bolt

I would gwouo the lower end of suggested torque

Make sure all bolt holes are a spotlessly clean if using bolts

If you using nuts, run a die over the studs and a tap through the nuts

A very very light smear of oil
torque up in stages

They dont have a torque setting for this engine. all they say ias tight. The problem with modern torque settings are they are for modern bolts which tend to better quality

Google not just bolt size but thread pitch as that can change everything

For Hercules, my mid 1930's Motor's Manual lists the following tensions, for final tightening of a warm engine -

- HX                   105 Lbs/Ft
- JX, RX, YX        75 Lbs/Ft
- QX, WX             60 Lbs/Ft
- RXL                   80 Lbs/Ft

I bought a Diamond T off the army with a RXC motor ,around 500cu in........three cylinders were full of water ,but blew that out ,and the motor started and ran OK .......I reckon the back head was done up finger tight , yet the gasket didnt blow .............corrosion in all the wet bores ,didnt seem to matter ......cant kill the old low compression engines.

From an American truck club newsletter. I found 42 ft/lb in a couple of other places as well.

For a Hercules engine, the cylinder head stud torque specification is 42 ft/lbs (57 Nm). It's important to tighten the head studs in a specific sequence, starting from the center and working outwards towards the sides and ends, and to repeat the tightening process until all fasteners are normally tight. A final tightening should be performed after the engine has reached operating temperature.

I have no idea what model Hercules this refers to,

I think as long as the torque is even and around about right is all it is needed
To many people want torque specs on everything including wheel nuts these days

Only thing that was torqued not so long ago was the head
Now it's every bloody thing, even if the bolt is still loose, as long as people here the click the consider it to be right
I have seen so many electrical conections fail because bolts are bottomed out and the lug is still swinging in the breeze
Todays tradesmen is pretty useless
