Hi All
I retired about two years ago and been on the lookout for a project, a couple of weeks ago i purchased a Bedford J1
One previous owner and must have been kept in a shed for most of it’s life
Hardly any body rust ie surface rust issue. It’s had a respray around 15 years ago and looks very good for it’s age, however I’m pretty sure it was originally white
The fact that the body is so good is a blessing for as while I’m no mechanic I’m certainly not a panel beater / or welder of note
Here are some specs:
Chassis: Bedford J1s
GVM: 2 ton 18 CWT
214 Cubic inch engine
Engine number: J1232163555
Cab: 22503
Trim: 501-1007
Paint: 568-9858
And another plate with simply: A008005
Anyways, slow and steady wins the race
I hope that I can tax peoples brains on this forum as I go, especially tracking down parts
Needs immediate attention to Brakes, Diff pinion seal, Probably Rear main cranckshaft seal and radiator is tin rouble
Engine runs nicley, but fuel system could do with a refreash
Anyways, if soemone could note the original colour for me that would be great, it’s a white of some description
cheers
Michael
Ps: attempted to add a pic, not sure if this will work

Nice and welcome.
Typical Bedford but.... Front brakes faded and smoking even when parked in the paddock.
I sleeved mine.

Good to see another Bedford being given a new lease of life.

Hi All
I bought the truck knowing that the brakes were locked up, vehicle will move but moves jerkily (if that’s a word)
Its my understanding that the truck is fitted with Clayton Dewandre brakes, please correct me if I'm wrong
So I have include a pic of a PBR Vacuum Gauge located on the steering column, I don’t know if this is standard, I have included some pics of the Gauge showing around 13-14 Lb while engine is running and a pic from a different angle
I have included a pic of the tow bar, as located here appears two, I’m thinking air lines for what I can only guess is for a trailer fitted with air brakes, correct me if I'm wrong
Any tips, explanations or links where I could follow this up would be appreciated
Kind regards
Michael

Hi Michael,
I think the gauge in your photo is actually measuring vacuum in "inches of mercury", rather than air pressure in PSI. I am pretty sure some of those PBR hand controls did have a gauge fitted on top as standard, although i have not seen one quite that modern looking.
And as for the connections at the rear, yes they are for trailer brakes, but again they are vacuum lines, not air.
Unless there is an air compressor belt driven off the front of your engine, then i am sure your truck does not have "air", only vacuum.
Brett.

There is a thread on this forum called "Vacuum trailer brakes" started by "projectinter", but i am afraid i don't know how to link you to it, sorry. My best suggestion would be to google "hcvc vacuum trailer brakes".
I don't have a lot of luck with the forum's search feature, i find google finds things a lot quicker and easier.
