They don't come up too often. It's a 50 year old publication. It will answer almost every question you have.

There are two active threads about Bedford brakes on the forum....   supply and demand...   Trying to find a $5 savings  might be a false economy

Update!

She's home safely!!
Went through a booze bus on the way out of town, cops just looked mystified and watched me cruise away!

Drove well for a vehicle that sat for 12 years.

Steering wanders and there's a spot somewhere where you can feel a hump or hang up and the steering is heavy as expected for a non power steer vehicle.

But it ran so well that we ended up driving it all the way to where we actually wanted it to be eventually instead of just moving it out of where it was.
90 minutes and it was quite happy.

The gearbox is a slight mystery, i was sure the gear pattern was
1st gear back left ,
2nd forward,
3rd back ,
and 4th forward,
reverse far left forward.

But I can't get it to select and stay in what should be 3rd,it pops out or grinds

And what should be 1st/2nd seem to be opposite.

I was pretty cautious driving as the rev counter cable is not connected at the bottom end (anyone know where it is supposed to go? ) it's obviously failed and is just wrapped around the front cross member.
I sat at 55kmh and just loped along.
It was blowing blue smoke for a short while to begin with but cleared up nicely and didn't seem to use oil or water, though it does have a leak in the radiator or a hose that seemed to heal itself on the drive.
I took 60L of water with me and had a friend drive behind, but never needed to add water at all!

Upon arrival i was manoeuvring in to a spot to continue work on her and while doing so the steering made a weird noise and felt graunchy,
There is evidence that the shaft has raised upwards, see photo of steering wheel boss and shaft visible.

It seems the flexible connection has failed (preliminary photo included) so I'll get to that today hopefully and see what i can do about it.

Once i can get that sorted, I'll pull all the wheels off and address the brake cylinders properly.

Ah coolo!
Any idea why im not able to select one of the gears and am i correct with the gearbox pattern?

Any idea where the rev counter cable is supposed to hook in?
I really need to get it degreased and on ramps so I can see what im looking at better.
Steering connection first though sadly as it's stranded in the way at an odd angle on the fire break!

If gears are hard to find ,its likely wear in gearbox top .....drivers get used to the selection ,but often no one else can drive the truck...........Ive got a bedford box in the dirt down the back ....probably stuffed by now .........the 4 sp were never worth anything.,probably because they are so reliable.

I was just thinking about this project and I have been down this road so many times.

999 times out of 1,000 it is better both time and money to buy someone else's work.

How many of us over the years have bought the $1,000 dollar "handyman's delight" with the insane delusion that we will have a beaut vehicle for under market value at the end.

The excuse is it is a hobby, to keep active or maintain interest. That only goes so far particularly if you are an instant gratification person like me. There is no problem that can not be solved by time and money. If you don't have one the other will fix it.

I have a list of projects as long as my arm of a bargain buy, heaps of work and cost spending (without counting labour!!!!) in the end, $25,000 for a lovely vehicle that I could have bought and had a year's driving pleasure for $20,000.

Old vehicle restorers are like gamblers - you only hear about the wins. By my age I could have done a Phd in Nuclear Physics with the lost time and bought a house with the extra cost over a straight purchase.

Rustybythesea123, you are a man after my own heart. Give me your address and I will send you my sack-cloth and ashes and a nicely used cat-of-nine-tails to flog yourself with to keep the faith going.

Having laboured so many times over the years, changing an old and crumbling "must have" gem into (at least) a moving "passable" restoration.

Over the last 15 years or so I have many times recommended the same thing Lang - pay a tad more than you'd really like to and enjoy it straight away!

That being said I have also achieved some amazing results on a shoestring and simply doing things through investigation and experimentation.
