1949 Commer Superpoise Q35?

Hello

My wife recently inherited her Grand Fathers 1949 Commer Superpoise 1 1/2 ton Truck.
It was used for the milk run for the Gordon Park suburb of Brisbane.
Was running 8-10 years ago but gave a very large backfire, blow the muffler apart and hasn’t run since.
I’m not a mechanic but know my way around the older vehicles, having a few in our stable however would love to talk to someone with a little mechanical knowledge of the 4 Cyl version and where to start.

Cheers Gavin

Welcome to the forum Gavin

I'm no expert on anything much, I'm sure someone will be along shortly with the good information to get you sorted
I'm thinking the back fire won't be a big issue to solve though
Think this tyle of motor needs back pressure on the exhaust or it will back fire
Looks like a good little machine and in pretty good nic

I believe they had a Humber motor.

This Australian retailer has some parts

www.vintagetrucksupplies.com.au/commer-s...tle&sort_direction=1

It's probably a Q30 model. Some of these Commers  have a 6 cyl. motor and some of the other smaller  models  a 4. Yes the 6 is the Humber car engine.

Backfiring in some cases , can be related to a ignition problem. The build up of unhurnt fuel in the exhaust system. Used to be a trick, a pretty girl walking on the footpath, you killed the ignition 20 yards before going past, and the fuel built up in the muffler,  as you drew level, turn on the ignition and bang.  A guy I worked with did this in a Toyota Landcruiser work vehicle.

John are you sure about Triumph and Vanguard? They are Standard Cars (plus Ferguson tractor) who I thought had their own engines.

YES Standards had their own engine for Vanguards,  around 70 bhp OHV . A very good engine but people over revved them and the pistons  often disintegrated and they  threw a rod threw the side of the block. For worn out bores, the repair kit included new sleeves ,no reboring required.

And they weren't side valve.
