I have a spare front grill so last night i mounted the radiator on the front of the chassie so im able to run my motor for short amounts of time while i work on the rest of the truck. This afternoon after work i decided to hook up the fuel line to the pump, i managed to cross thread the last fitting, Not a good start.
So i didnt let that dampen my spirets, i decide to fill the radiator with water and coolant ready to set the dizzy and hopefully in the next few days turn her over. after a few mins water started dripping from the water pump. Just one of those days....

when i took the water pump off for the first time it felt smooth and spun freely, so i gave it a clean up and didnt do too much more with it, After taking it off the second time it seems the water is leaking from two small holes that are on the underneath side. There is one hole on the top side just behind a 7/16 nut that has locktabs holding it in place. Looking into the two holes on the bottom at the right angle im able to see the shaft that runs though to the impeller. So can any one tell me what there holes do? and how do i go about fixing the water pump.

Dave - Those holes are to let any coolant, that leaks past the seal, escape to the outside world .. and tell you that your water pump seal is shot.
If they weren't there, the water would get into the water pump bearing and wreck it.

You don't have much choice now but to pull the pump off and dis-assemble it, and repair it. The leak will only get worse if left.

The water pump seal is a carbon washer, that is held against a machined surface in the pump housing, by a spring under the impeller.

Water pumps leak, when the seal washer surface becomes damaged .. or the machined seal surface in the housing becomes damaged or corroded .. or the spring becomes weak or rusty, and fails to exert enough pressure on the seal washer.

You have to remove the pump, press the shaft out of the impeller and housing carefully, and then examine what needs replacing in the seal mechanism.

The housing seal surface will probably need to be re-machined .. or ground with a standard Black & Decker valve-seat cutting stone, reversed on the stone holder.
This reversing the stone presents a flat grinding surface to the seat, as against the 45

Hi MR
Like the resto. Just wondering what Beddy it is as I have just been given a K series and wish to restore it. If it's a K do you have any leftover spares that you'd part with or know where some are? Nicko

Thanks Don, im actually going away fishing till next thursday so it will have to wait till i get back.
Nicko it is a model K, not sure i would have many parts im scrounging parts myself. What parts are you after as i have used a few parts off simalar modles, the ML, D and O have some parts that are the same.
Im having troubles finding a fourth rim. What i do have is a 20' rim that is off another modle, it was set up for duels. It is simalar to the K rim that the centre is fixed to the inner by rivits. Wht i plan to do and i dont know if it will work or not but take the center out of the K rim and put it in the other, i will either have to get some more rivits or weld it in. Has anyone tried this?

Hi all
Mate I was fortunate to get all 4 rims plus a spare tyre. The truck used to belong to my Dad and he got 3 rims and tyres of a later model at a clearing sale some time back. they arn't the full steel type like the originals on the "K" and are offset for duals but the PCD and centers are the same. Might try and see if they fit this weekend so the I can start on the originals. Heard about an old fellow at Junee that still has one that he use's to cart hay with each year. Still runs well so I am on the hunt to find him and see if he will part with it. If he does I will let you know and what condition the rims are in. Cheers Nicko

Dave, I have an O which did have a water pump issue like yours, the local bearing joint could not find a direct replacement (as they dont exist???) :( but did have a universal type replacement with seals, springs & washers, etc. If my faulty memory is half right the Beddy has a step in the shaft, the universal was the larger size and a mate machined the step into it... cost $20 or $30 and a few beers. :o

I did do the the flip the carbon washer seal thing which stopped the leak for a while. ;)

Back from Fishing, Steve sounds great, i know a few famers around junee so if you need a hand tracking the guy down give me a buzz and ill see what i can do. And with the other rims i hope you hve better luck than i did. I was told a guy had a K with 4 good tires and rims i could have if i replace them with a tire and rim that fits, I get there and the two Beddy K i was told he had are a J3 and a J2 or somthing close to that. I was however suprised at how close the J2 is to a modle K, the chassie looks almost identical, same motor and gear box, just a differant cab and wheel size.
Sarge, i dropped into a parts place on my way through town and they said dont worry about a kit, just buy a new water pump, i have a second motor here for parts and the water pump on it looks a little differant. My guess is its been put on later, like the universal pump you mentioned. Ill take it off tomorrow and have a look. the shaft you were talking about, where you got a mate to turn it down, is that where the fan belt pully sits?

Been pretty busy over the past month or so both on the farm and on my truck so i thought i would give a bit of an update. Stripped all the timber flooring out of the cab which took hours, then had to either drill out or weld nuts to the tops of the screws i couldnt remove. At the back of the cab where to wood sits was rusty, so i cut that section out and had a new peice cut and folded. Over duck season opening i had some shooters stay on the farm, one is a professional welder so he welded it in for me, it took him a few hours. I started grinding back the weld, and then i will hit it with a flapdisk.
I have plenty of pics but they are taking too long to download so i will have to put them up later.
Still underside whether to get the cab blasted or whether i will use paint stripper and ill blast just some of the rusty sections.

I ended up cutting the rust out of one rim and welding in some cut steel, the rims were then blasted which i etched, they are at the tire place waiting to get fitted. some of the tires are looking a bit worn, and perrished i have been quoted $280 a tire for 20' 700.

Does anyone know if this is a decent price or know of some good second hand tires.
