Hi all, This is my very first thread Ive just purchased a 1972 Butterbox Inter C1600 She was off a farm and hasn't been regoed for a few years. When i got her home on a had another good look at her, fired her up....oo oh running on 5 pots put her in gear moved her ok but oh no someone forgot to put brakes in, Phew that was close peddle went straight to the floor, thank heavens i bought her home on a tilt tray. The question is how do you bleed the things, it's got a vacum thingy on the side of the chassis do i start bleeding from there or from the near side rear.I also notice that the handbrake band that goes around the prop shaft has twisted, so can't pull on the hand brake.Im also wondering what cu inch size the engine is, Im lead to believe there were two sizes. I will start with the obvious plug points etc to see if we can get all 6 cyl working again after that i will be scratching my head again. Ive always had a soft spot for these old girls so im really keen on making her all better up again, putting her on club rego and doing the circut thing etc.Hoping some of you blokes will know a jolly sight more than me about these things so any info will be much appreciated........Thanks grayster54

The brake slave cylinders and the master cylinder may need some work before they get bled. Depends how long it was sitting around for

JBran could be correct the possibility of moisture in the fluid causing corrosion and contaminates causing the seals to fail is high.

Would be worth emptying the system of fluid and replacing I would think. And the process would be fill up the reservoir then bleed it at the booster (the vaccum thingy ;D). Then at the wheels. Might need to refill the reservoir a couple of times and will need an assistant to push the brake pedel. I have also found you might need to do them a couple of times to get everything right. One thing when doing it from memory don't push the pedel all the way to the floor or let it return to quickly.

International used a number of different engines. If it is a international petrol the secret to finding out what engine it is is by finding the engine number. Usually it is stamped on the block on the driver's side (carby side also) of the engine at the front. The engine number might also be on the rego sticker.

Mate, if that has been sitting around and the brakes don't work bleeding them will not fix the problem. That is a BS line that people say when they sell a vehicle with no brakes as in, "and, oh, that's right, the brakes just need bleeding". What they should really say is that you'll just have to pull it all apart, get the slave and master cylinders resleeved and kitted and a kit through the booster more than likely, then you can bleed it and hopefully the linings and drum won't be worn out.

You can give bleeding a go, but I reckon you are wasting your time. The only time the system needs bleeding is after it has been pulled apart, if the fluid level has got low which is why the air is in there, it must have leaked out somewhere.

Any old vehicle you should try and get in the habit of everytime you jump in one, just drive forward a bit a hit the brakes to try them. I must admit it's not an easy habit to develop, but after working in a used truck yard a few frightening experiences like the one you have just had remind you. The other thing that can happen to them if they have been sitting is the brakes wear a little and next thing the seals start working on a rusty bit of the cylinder.

Generally you bleed the master cylinder at the lines if it has been off, then the booster, then the wheel furtherest away from the master cylinder and work your way back to the wheel closest to the master cylinder.

Hi grayster. Why not save yourself a whole lot of greif and do the full overhaul on the brakes. Unless you know the service history on the truck I would be inclined to do more than just bleed them. As long as brakes and steering are ok, you can steer it and stop it. The life you save may just be your own.
I'm not big on false economy.

G'day fellas, firstly a big thankyou for your suggestions,i rung the previous owner and he said he had put a new master cylinder in it a couple of weeks before i purchased it. i was going to check it out but it started to rain and the old girl is parked out side at a mates place (no room at mine) and yes we need the rain in the Riverina. Im looking for a shed to house the old girl hoping there is one coming up soon, then i can really hook into it.
