Perkins 354 Turbo

Perkins 354 Turbo was created by Slow Poke
I am having the old 354.1 replaced with a 354.4 turbo in a front engined Bedford bus. I am concerned that there may not be enough space in the old engine box and will have too rebuild it to fit the turbo and extra heat shields and insulation required. The refit is being done at a workshop a long way from home as that is where she broke down. I don't want to pay to have something done that I can do (build a new engine box) so if it doesn't fit am considering having the old exhaust system, manifolds etc bolted in place of the turbo manifolds and driving the bus home as a naturally aspirated diesel. Doing this should also save me a few dollars as there will be very little change to the existing setup and the fit would be more straight forward, no new exhaust or intake required etc. I can then expand the box, fit the turbo, fit a more efficient air cleaner and intake to suit the turbo and get the exhaust system modified to suit the larger dump pipe from the turbo at my leisure at home.
My worry is will it do any damage to the new motor driving it like this. The lower hp won't be a worry as the old engine copped except on hills although it got there in the end. I assume that the injector pumps etc are set up to work a turbo charged engine but is this very different to a non turbo? Any worthwhile comments appreciated.

G'day you will get alot of smoke and noise and not much go with the turbo removed but it will be driveable. How far have you got to bring it home?

The only other thing I can think of is that the turbo motors usually have a steel line going from the inlet manifold to the fuel pump to stop it putting too much fuel into the motor before the turbo catches up. I'm not sure what the pump will do with out that one hooked up properly, I suspect it won't want to give it a lot of fuel.
Your motor may not have it anyway, in which case you'll have no worries.

Block the turbo oil feed and drain back to the sump lines.
Injectors and pump will be set to give a lot more fuel, she'll be a smoker and the workshop may have misgivings about lube oil dilution.
I can see where you're coming from though, a lot of extra work required with the turbo engine installation.
