HI

Down Gippsland way here . I've had a project on the backburner for ages . I'm looking for a decent cab for a 1940 Chev 1/2 ton ute . The ubiquitous truck cab as made by GMH .. they fitted em to Chevs from 1940 to 47 ..... fixed windscreen and the quarter door windows .

I've got two of the 1940 model light truck/utes , light commercial 113" w.b. They are both ex CFA vehicles . The GMH built ute part is long gone, rotted away .

Thanks in advance Mike

If the dates are right it is 16 years since the first request. The search can not have been too energetic. Here is one for $1,000 but a quick flash through Marketplace changing the searches to each capital city within 500km came up with at least a dozen 1938-46 trucks in various states of repair with suitable cabs.

Hi Lang

Yes it's been a while, I found two of these chevies in 1998. One was badly rusted , the other one has been in a prang, the cab was damaged . GMH made thousands of these cabs. The army used many of the 1940 models but these two escaped somehow.

I'd like to find the plans to build a ute style body. Wooden frame with metal skin.  But the drop side wood tray body was an option , so that will do.

Another

Here is one I had. Body was original GMH offering for both civil and military - all wood. Only exterior difference between 1938 and 1946 was the front end tinwork. This one has the military opening screen - only a bonus for you if that was all you found. You can fix the screen as standard and remove hinges if you do not want them.

Iv  e been reading the GMH issued repair manual for 1940, it has a supplement for the 1941 DEFENCE models. The supplement mentioned that the army model 13 , the 15 cwt, was fitted with the heavier I beam front axlef from the 1 Ton model. They fitted wider rims and 7.50- 16 tyres on the army model 13 .

That's a neat looking body on your 41 model, GMH offered a wide  range of bodies.  I found some Australian newspaper adverts from 1940. Well side body was popular pre-war.

This is another style offered. The "hungry boards" on the ute body were factory wellside option.

That ute went from Istanbul to Normandy a while back. I brought it back to Australia and I am told  some idiot pulled the body off and put it on a Holden chassis and dumped the entire rest of the gear.

Here is my identical GMC I am working on at the moment.

I have found it is fatal to have two of anything as it is automatically the start of a collection.

Jerry cans have a great history. I have about 100 including early German pre-war production and the British copy. Also quite a few of early American experiments before they settled on their useless standard model with the large screw top that thread-jammed, always leaked and wasted millions of litres of fuel because they will not pour properly without a pourer (that also leaked). Of course soldiers seldom had pourers available, the first thing to be lost.

After the war the French set up a factory to convert over a million American jerry cans by welding on the great non-leaking German/British over-centre lock cap which actually pour quite well without a dedicated pourer.

I am trying to match the collection of these guys.

I found these adverts in 1941 newspapers. It seems that during WW2, a good number of new vehicles were used by essential users I.e. govt. Departments. The PMG and local councils , Railways.   That's sad,  your nice ute getting the hot rod treatment . Used to be a few of those 41-47 chev coupe  utes still on the road  in original condition  back in the 1970s.
