This would have been about 1980 when Luya Julius managed to get the big gear up from Yellow Express, Victoria. Had it up here for a while, but it cost too much in repairs, to operate profitably, compared to what else was out on the road.
One trip they took up the Toowoomba range cost them big time, they had the three Kenworths and had two R 600 macks as well hooked up. Started the first climb and one of the KW's $hit a gearbox, this caused the load to fall back onto the Macks, this in turn snapped an axle in one of the R 600's and then a gear box in the other Mack went. Now everything just came to a full stop a third of the way up that first climb.
Frantic phone calls were then made, and all Brumbles could supply immediately, was one of the Leaders, so Guitzy hot foots it out there and stiff bars the front KW.
On the word go, that whole shootin' match just went up and over the hill.
One truck replaced THREE and it did the job as though it had only a couple of ton on the hook.
Got to hand it to Cyril Anderson, he put them things together so well, they could pull Christ of the cross.

Hope this one sounds better.
In regards to the exKeogh Scammell she looks like she does due to her upgrade to a 400HP Cummins the down side to the upgrade was she had a bad habit of spitting her joey box when changing back from 4low to3low due to the improved HP and torque just to keep you on your toes.

The Smiths one....is it just giving a nudge now and again?Doesn't seem to be barred on
but looks like it is helping near the end, there.
Last time I saw the LS Contractor pulling it's weight was on the Old South Road, near Coober Pedy,1979.They carted a heap of stuff for the new Ranger Mine at Jabiru.

Swishy mate,
Talk about put a bloke under the pump. From memory the Ironhorses were rated @475HP,Keoghs Scammell was rebuilt/engineered to 400HP and Smithy's Scammell around 350HP. When Steve ( the driver of the Ironhorse that was seen talking to the motorcycle cop ) and I were talking about the video he said the counterweight went close to 30 ton it was a part of an old press that Fleets pulled out of GMH Port Melb. in the 70s' and the other counterweights were boxes of plate scrap weighing between 10&12 ton and the complete combination grossed approximately 1000ton.
As allways IDSTBK.![]()
