Apparently NA 8V71. A lot more of these trucks would be saved if the sellers wanted just a bit more than scrap value, but where they want three or four times scrap value, restoration is very often not feasible, buyers are put off and the trucks very often get scrapped due to lack of interested buyers at the high asking prices. Pity.

Easy to pick the GM eh? Old mate didn't want to use the dreaded "Detriot Diesel" words in the ad, might be worried about scaring them off.

Which raises the question- "What is current scrap value for a prime mover?" I agree that it should often form the basis of valuations for many of these old jiggers. Buying or selling, it is worth keeping the current price in mind. What is that current price?A lot more of these trucks would be saved if the sellers wanted just a bit more than scrap value, but where they want three or four times scrap value, restoration is very often not feasible, buyers are put off and the trucks very often get scrapped due to lack of interested buyers at the high asking prices. I don't mean to single this seller out as I don't know what he wants for this truck, but I feel the right thing to do to your faithful old machine is to see that it is restored and not wring every last cent out of it. Thinking scrap value may be around $5k, when at a high and depending on weight.

Technically, if the owner has run this bit of gear as a professional business for more than 5 years it should owe him nothing....assuming it has had no more than its routine service and maintenance....Selling it for more SHOULD incur capital gains tax...but a good accountant will take care of that.
The point is though, why SHOULDNT an owner try and maximise their profit margin? If restorers cant pay fair market value why should the owner drop his price?, even if the fair market value is determined by the scrap value! Not every one is interested in keeping these old beauties on the road....there's probable more agin than for!

So just as a point of interest..
my daily driver, in roadworthy condition and registered, 69 model 350 Monaro, should start at around $160, being the scrap value? Or should i try and fleece some jockie and start it at a grand...
If this bloke has been driving this buggy in his daily business, one could wildly assume that it would be within kicking distance of somewhere near roadworthy..
Perhaps he had a kit thrown through the engine and banged a clutch in while he was at it..
Ol mate the mechanic may have insisted a few new accesories during that rebuild too....
Maybe even a radiator re core..
In doing all that having decided to run the old truck some more, may have relined the brakes along with a handful of new bearings etc.
Might of even had a set of batteries thrown it it recently..
Maybe Ol Mate that owns the truck, thinks it may be a little while off going to the scrap yard!
Having perhaps thrown 20 grand at it in the last 5 minutes..
One day one of these sellers is going to get upset when someone puts the word scrap against their vehicle...
As ol mate the Assessor would say......
"just an observation"..
