Here is the photo I was looking for. It is taken from "R. G. LeTourneau Heavy Equipment, The Electric Drive Era 1953-1970" by Eric C. O)rlemann. I highly recommend it to anyone interested is this sort of machinery, everything for Sno Buggys to Tree Crushers, Diggers, Forestry gear, Cranes to Missile Launchers.

I guess they could do away with the gearbox, but as you say a 300HP generator and motor aint light. I guess they could use regen braking with resistors (more weight). Modern electronics would make motor control easy and you could set the engine to run at either most economical or most power as required.

I'm not sure if I would want that GM screaming at full noise in the back window though.

Some good 'un's there, Swishy!
I especially like the exhaust arrangements on that Western Terex jigger.

Swishy, your the float man. With that photo of the twin power cat scraper (657??) behind the Pete p/mover, I'm trying to work out the actual decking arrangement of the float. To me, it looks like a normal twin axle dolly with the second gooseneck, but there seems to me to be a heck of a bend in the lower section as well as being very close to the ground. or is it hooked up to the dolly with some sort of drawbar affair? I thought it may be the same arrangement as in the photo's directly above that. where the 4 red Pete's are marshalled in the yard.
I can sort of dig how the decking is made up, trying to get the weight down a bit but still retaining as much strength as possible.
Also looking at the shot of the D11 on the blue float, it looks to be made out of similar material??
