Ozfury .... Did it have the crane behind the cab? I reckon it was Ex KT823 .... Then PA823 for Comet .... Have photos of it on the computer from Jim Duffield who delivered it up north. It wasn't an ex Zacuba one though

Yes Werk, it had the hiab behind the cab. I was relief driver on the dam run, we did it before the road was bitumen from Mingela, truck rode as rough as guts on the corrugations. Coming home empty one Saturday morning the passenger side windscreen vibrated out. Once the bitumen was finished we relinquished the run to QRX and the truck and pig went down to Brisbane, soon after the pig was involved in a fatal crash near Caloundra, with the drawbar snapping off, I think the rough Burdekin Dam Rd might have contributed somewhat!

Gday Werk,
nice shot of 823............Yeah , wouldnt have come from Zacuba with that color scheme.
They were all ways white, except after PGH took over ,when 843....844......&845 ( still with Alltrans)..
were painted bright blue & white, (looked good too). TNT paid a fortune to a paint consultant
to design the scheme, trouble was, .it looked some what similar to the opposition.(Austral Brick)
Also a crane behind the cab was next to useless for brick cartin.
Oz......Sorry about all that.
As for the corragated road bit, its a wonder all your teeth didnt fall out.

Another TNT 8 wheeler ......Courtesy of T&BT
This might get a bit of topic...........But..........
When i was in 819 we used to do a fair amount of brick deliveries to the south coast,....always leaving early to
get back to the yard by about 9 am. That meant running with the coalies on Appin road to Bulli.
Now 819 as an 8 wheeller had the legs on the coalies , purely because it wasnt as heavy........how ever if a set
of lights were catching me , it was a safe bet it was the green & white SAR of Scarsellas (suspect spelling ) with
the 450 Cummins aboard....A big mover at the time.
Any way, on Appin road was my morning tea stopping spot (every one has a favorite one) on the way back.
While eating my Lammo & cuppa i some times went for a quick stroll into the scrub (always liked being in the
scrub) with maybe a quick squirt at the same time..........heres where we go off course a bit.
Now the country here (except for the road) could be classed as rough , even mountainous,& heaverly timbered.
You could think no body had ever set foot there. ............Anyway this day i decides to walk a bit further into
the trees, about 100 yards in i came to a cliff with a drop of about 200 yards into the valley( for want of better
terminology).......Looking over the edge of the cliff, i spotted a ledge about 6 feet wide & it was about 10 feet
down to it. Also there was an area where you could climb down onto that ledge (not the easiest but you could
do it ) .........Sooo i thinks, ive just gotta have a bo peep at this. Down i goes & i am now standing on that
ledge. Looks over the edge & thinks, i wood not want to fall down there.
Turning around to climb back up, i spotted what this tale is about.
Set into the cliff & level with the ledge was an arch ( i could only say it was cut into the vertical wall.)
It was about 3 foot wide & 4 foot high & the surround was BRICKED . The were set length wise into the cliff,
so the hole had to be all cut out of the rock to resemble a fire place. That would have been a job & a half.
Now they were really old bricks but the job was as neat as you like. Looking at it, your first thoughts were......
this is a fire place, but why ...no room for a house of any kind , also no smoke stains, no rubbish, nothing
to say any body had ever been there ...ever.
Called in there a coupla times (never , ever thought about a camera) Then conveniently forgottaboutit.
In the last 10 years i got to thinking about it , ...........Ive had a few goes at trying to find it to no avail.
I think its at an area where the road was moved, which now runs along side a cliffy sort of spot
& over burden was pushed over the side that could have covered the spot.
But the question remains ......what was it? ........who put it there?.........why ?
Could it have been a secret entrance to a bushrangers hide out?
Is there a pile of goodies still there?
One day im gonna have another bo peep at that area.
so thats it , a little off topic,.....but im thinking , ...........what the hell was it doin there .
