Public telephone boxes. The B button was pushed after inserting coins for a trunk call, don't know about the A button.

Telephones.

The A & B buttons had something to do with where the coins went. From memory, you pressed the A button when the number answered, or the B button to get a refund if they didn't?

Public telephone boxes is the correct answer. It takes me back to my first job in a telephone exchange when you had to call the exchange and ask the operator (sometimes it was me) for the town you wanted to call. My girlfriend's Mother never worked out how I always knew it was her calling. (her number, 7623, came up in from of me)

I earned seven pounds two shillings and sixpence ($14.25) per week. I have never had so much buying power.

When my parents got their first phone, it was on a party line. Our number was 21S. When anybody on the line got a call, the phone in every house rang. We knew it was for us if it rang three short rings, three long rings, three short rings. (the Morse code for S)

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

I used to work for a rental car company on island that was a tourist destination. There was nothing at the harbour where the ferries docked - everyone got off, and went to the carpark and drove away....the buses filled and left, and then the taxis...and whoever was in the rental car shed left too. Finally the Asian tourist finished snapping photos and realised they were alone.

Back at the workshop/hire shop/valet/drycleaners where I spent my days the phone would ring...and no one would answer. So I'd say ''Push Button A !!!''

''Ah, you have rental car?''
