Great story Richard
Used to run up and down Macquarie pass a fair bit years ago and the only outfit that could I get round that hairpin in one go was a bogie drive S line with a triaxle tanker (non DG of course).

bout 95 went with a bloke Richard Carter from goulburn in a v8 val mack, 4 deck stock create to an abattoir at the bottom of the hill. he went round those hair pins like it was nothing, pull up one nite, got under the trailer and ajusted the brakes and keeped going, mind you he went up and down that road a fair bit, pretty cool for a young fella. just thinking back he to had to take a few bites at a few corners

Memories of that one Rich. As I had just started runnind sydney out Mt Gambier in the Beddy 6/53 single drive with a Freighter 9ft spread. Down to Wollongong to load coils for GMH in Adelaide, dropped one on the rear, one up near the front, chained & dogged them down, tarp etc. Asked another joker how to get to Marulan, ahh, just go up the pass son. Little tip though, when you get to the hairpin, better nudge the wall with the front bar, reverse back on full lock a bit to drag the spread over the hump. I still have that night encounter firmly burnt into my brain, even more so when I could see what appeared stars down there in the dark.
I was glad when I eventually made out to the highway.
As I become more confident with this route, then saddled up in the Atkinson with the V671 & the 3 way spread, I become smarter then, used to push the axles right up far as I could until I arrived at the next town after the hair pin, to spread them out to give the big A a better ride
Memories, hmmmm

Looks like the octopus that was always down the back of the old bus and truck museum at Tempe.
Nice to see it clean out in the sun (grey sun at least)
