World's oldest running car, 'La Marquise,' sells for $4.6 million at auction
'La Marquise,' considered the world's oldest running car, sold for $4.6 million at auction.
A steam-powered car considered the oldest vehicle in the world still running has sold at auction in the United States for more than $4.6 million.
The De Dion-Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout, nicknamed "La Marquise," which was built in France in 1884, sold for more than
twice its estimate at auction Friday in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
RM Auctions listed its top speed as 38 miles per hour (61 kilometers per hour) and said it had only had four previous owners over the past 127 years.
The late Texas collector John O'Quinn had bought the historic car, which participated in the first automobile race in 1887 and four separate
London-to-Brighton runs, for $3.5 million in 2007.

One of the first steam powered vehicles to be driven on the road was (I think) a lorry type vehicle built by Robert Stephenson. One Christmas eve the drivers decided to stop for a pint at the local inn, when they came back out the thing had burnt to the ground.
Not sure how the insurance company would have seen that at the time. Might have even set a precedent.

Built in 1884 and it did 60kph.
That was blindingly fast in its day.
And all built with wrought iron, low carbon steel and brass.
What's the thinking that once we are finished with spending big money on developing solar/ electric that the External Combustion Engine's virtues will be re-examined?
I (personally) can't imagine 'All Electric' vehicles going beyond light, local service truckettes and personal transport.
But, an efficient, road going depot to depot long distance steam powered B double?
That seems do-able to me.
Modern technology, materials and thinking re-applied to fluid expansion (steam) as a motive power. . . ?
That shouldn't be to hard for the smartest animal on the planet.
just saying,

A steam lorry ?
Well, proof of concept was good, (100 years ago) but the metals technology of the day wasn't up to the task.
