Thanks Cam. Olfulla has put a lot of work into his article and has more up to date info than I did when I wrote my book.

g'day all .. just to digress a little, although still in keeping with the thread, is this question...when were the first F4870's sold?...
...i know the 3870's were still being produced in 1981.....the sleepers had a heavy rib around the external rear of the cab tunnel area and vents mounted high in the rear each side of the roof on these very last ones...
...there is an 8-'81 F4870 about with ch/no L00023, but were they sold in that year?.....

Detective,This pic is from the 1980 Adelaide Truck Show.(Nov.1980)
It was touted as the first 6V92 powered 4870 to be sold.I think Booths took 2 or 3 units.
Cummins powered 48s had been available for at least some months before this time.Initially 48s weren't offered with a GM option, but high customer demand brought about their introduction.

Thanks Detective , I didnt know Plastic Atkis were produced in 81 but there could have been some unsold ones still kicking around. Have you got a photo showing one of those last sleepers ?

...Atkipete .. i may be wrong about the 3800's being produced in 1981, as the last of them may have been sold in that year. There is a picture of the tunnel rib on your flickr site a few pics down on the first page....a plain yellow sleeper with black bullbar...we painted this for MBCV years ago....
....Geoff, there were heaps of differences between the two...some major and others very minor.... mainly in the cosmetics is where you will notice it. Still there was a lot of ''blending'' between the two and nothing it appears was fixed into hard and fast rules.....
