..... good point chocs .. but the Acco's just didn't have the big HP of the Atkinsons or 4070's....i'm pretty sure you couldn't option a turbo on an Acco 903....although a lot were fitted with them afterwards? ....

That is an interesting truck Werkhorse ( #277 ) looks like the remains of one of the DCA 6x6 fire tenders. The Plastic Atkinsons had an advantage over the ACCO, T Line and 4870 in that the chassis was wider. Dont think VT903 was ever offered by IH ex factory in the ACCO but some retrofitted. Turbo has to live out the back but what a great sounding engine.

These were the Atkinsons that Department of Civil Aviation had as Ultra Large Water Tenders at all major airports in Australia in the 70's.
335 Cummins with a remote mounted turbo, straight out exhaust (awesome sound), Allison automatic,6 wheel drive with Kirkstall axles.
I spent many hours on, in and around these beasties when I did my apprenticeship and trade with DCA.

Good memory jog .... Thanks Werkhorse.
Those Ultra Large Fire Tenders came onto the scene about 1972, first one I was involved with went to Darwin Airport.
If I remember correctly, the cab/chassis came from Atkinson and all the bodywork and fit out was done at Wormalds in Melbourne, buggered if I can remember the engines though.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, Cummins V-300 keeps popping up.
