Hi Swish, I don't know when you last visited the UK ?
We are no longer in the age of Plastic cabbed Atkis....
Unlike Oz, we are connected by the channel tunnel to around 2/3 of the worlds land mass.
Oz drivers obviously cannot drive directly to other countries.
Pommy drivers do regular runs to places like Greece, Italy, Norway , Sweden, Russia, to name a few.
In doing so they come into contact with very differing climates, and cover many k's.
We do not generally use Yank trucks as we have good access to many good locally made makes.
Yes some roads in the UK are cramped, but we have many areas where they are not.
I speak for the thousands of UK truck drivers who drive all over the BIG lump of land that is not Oz or USA.
Things have changed over here.
I look forward to your undoubtedly interesting reply and look forward to seeing you in a few weeks.
Cya, mate.
Cheers

Yanky Trucks have extreme weather like Australia wiff Many miles /Kilometers to get from A - B wiff wide open spaces
Pommy Lorries travel in mainly a colder climate than Oz n only have to go a few hours travel n U B there wiff cramped road conditions

Hi Swish.
Yes the tunnel is good, Its crazy to think I could drive all the way to Kuala Lumpur, without getting me feet wet, and than catch a rowing boat into Perth or Darwin....?
But I am leaving it to Mr Quaintarse to bring me into Tullamarine in the evening of Nov 3.
It will be good to see a bit more of Oz for a few days.
27days to touchdown..
Cheers

PS: Whats the Unicorn for ?
Bugly said you were like a Cyclops...
or perhaps you are a one-eyed Unicorn ??
but I would have probably noticed this in 2009..

Another reason Pommie Lorries were slow and underpowered, by our standards, was that until 1957 the UK had a 20 mph speed limit for HGV.

...this part of the discussion is all a bit of a moot point :
:
...
...never mind about the ''why's and wherefore's''...suffice to say the yank trucks compared to the pommie types, show up only as just different breeds of cattle... :
......so are we discussing Aussie Atkinson trucks?......or why in fact they couldn't fly to the moon!! :

Thanks guys for the replies, I was perhaps mixing my metaphors so to speak...
But back when the Road Train special was put together... the special bits were plonked into the chassis, under the cab at the customers request... does that mean that The KW mob and others would not/could not do the same job, or did Atkinson have the best chassis and more accommodating engineering team??? Were the others just very slow in catching up? Did these specials cost more than making them was worth??? ( I do note other brands doing the big slogs but from my very limited knowledge the big A seemed to be the chosen truck in this particular era)
It would be great if we could track down some experts from workshop/management.
