I knew the Lewis family when I lived in Gulgong from the early 70's to the mid 80's.I don't recall ever seeing that truck in that time. Was that photo taken in Gulgong?is it still owned by them?

..Good questions oliver, the pics were taken at a transport yard in the industrial area at GULGONG a couple of months ago . no signs there at all, just the name on the
truck door...….. was talking to a bloke that was the owners son, but didn't get his name, so I just assumed it was Lewis, ..…..I dont think the truck would have been at Gulgong in your time frame...………

Going by the similar motto on the bug deflecter, I would say yes ,they do still own the old Mack, ,,,,,,,,,,,,

..Now, Where was I ????

Right , the old R600...…………

The R send is under going a bit of a transformation, up grading to 58,000 lbs, this means renewing most things
including new spindles on the axle housings, all new brake gear etc etc,

All new springs and running gear ............ and what ever ,to transform to the new rating ................

Recon centres to suit the application..........
So when it is finished, life will start all over again in the road train business.
When all the mechanicals are finished , a new paint job should have it looking mickey mouse.
I would like to think that i do see it sometime after it is back on the road. ..................

As i said , i got a lot of info in a short time, so, i hope what i have written here is pretty
close to the money. ................

Nice work Billy.
I know how you feel about getting the job done. Sometimes you think you can see the end of the tunnel but find it is a train coming. But like I found out, you will get it done and it seems to all fall into place faster asyou get close to the end.

They dont look like 58,000 axles

58's are huge and heavy, even the spiders are really heavy as in reinforced webs cast into the spokes, you struggle to get any air fitting in to the valve to check the tyre pressure

The axle caps have 8 studs unlike the 44's that have 6 studs

58's ride incredibly rough even with a load

I dont thing the springs even flex, even with a big load they stay the same

You could be right Mrs. All I did was take some pics and listen to the bloke that was playing around with it...
You wouldn't know what was happening with the whole ars end, but you would think those axles they are building up
would be going into the beast ...…………..

.GDay $wishy, it all back there somewhere, but.
1975 R685 originally (as per rego check).
Mack V8 non electric . (I wouldn't have a clue about the HP .)
18 speed box , there is two sticks,( so a look at the pics might give you a clue )
I don't know if a joey sits behind the 18 speeder or not.
A 9 ton front axle is to be fitted.
Not being a Mack man, I wouldn't have a clue if its right or wrong .
I listened as the bloke talked, but regardless, they appear to have put a hellava lot of work into the old girl,
As I said I got too much info too quick, with not enough time to absorb it.
………………..Billy...………………….
Actually , when you look at the pics of the old hubs , they look like 8 stud axles...………
where as the new ones are 6 stud jobs.....and....the new hubs look meatier....
