...maybe they had an earlier plan to run a dog/pig trailer behind them...which, with the tall gearing and extra tyres, axles, weight and payload, may have theoretically neccesitated the use of the deeper gears in certain situations ??

But all the 15s had deep reduction disconnected ....NFI exactly why though
Werk, weren't you on the 'spanners' at one time ? [smiley=rolleyes.gif]
Think real hard about now,
" why in the hell, would a 'ghost' - EVER - need to drop the box into deep ?" [smiley=lolk.gif]
regards greenie [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]
Yar i got that part of it .... But why spec them in the first place? I have a theory .... They were thinking of the after linehaul uses like Bulk etc .... I would have thought all the added weight and parasitic power loss would be a disadvantage .... But I guess it didn't matter.

Hmm, don't think so, not with the light weights they were doing. It would only ever be used by some clown who reckoned ya' had to grab EVERY cog, just to show off. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
The only time I ever needed to use deep reduction, was when I was grossing about 50 ton or more, to get moving on the flat, or if I got meself stuck where I should NOT have been. Oh, if I was loaded to the gills , think well over 50 ton, and had to go up some range like the Tollbar or Cunningham's, then you'd just about stop at the bottom and slip it into deep 3, that way you had one change left, around the corner to deep 1, then it was only reverses left in that box.
That bottom cog was a LULU, a snail could have dragged you off at the lights, sheeite, Grandma was the correct name for that cog.
It would be as Billy has already stated, the changes in the 15 were very easy steps from 1 to 10, and the deep would never be used, so blank it out.

...have to admit greenie, the old GM 6 inline Peterbilt in with Union Steel had 24 ton on her back one day in about 1994 when she came to a full stop on the Canterbury Rd hill (Bayswater)...simply because with all those 200 neddies, I couldn't skip shift down quickly enough
...10 speed RoadRanger, 5.29 diffs and a broken RH engine mount, stuck in the middle lane with a very decent incline to lift off from. She did it with no clutch slippage...but no fancy business either...all the way up in low first......
...but there still HAS to be a reason for the 15 speeds they had in 'em.....

Rumor had it
th@ the L8 60's n earl eye 70's
anything sent to Au from U.S.
twas sent to Vietnam
Also
the old RR 10 twaz 900 series as in 900 ft lb torque capacity
the RR9515 twaz a slightly heavier build wiff 950 ft lb torque capacity
the Screemer 8V-71 for hwy use twaz 318HP n 818 ft lb torque
so may B they chose a slighty more robust cog box in D 15 speed
Jist Guess n

All Ghosts had either RTO910 or RTO915 boxes Ted
No RTO9515s at all
No RTO9515s at all

New production lines are always a good way to get rid of "old" new stock. Perhaps Billy is on the right track- RTO915's on the cheap to get rid of them.... and then later becoming standard spec.

I am leaning towards the fact that the most common box was the RTO915 .... So maybe resale night have been on their minds ....
