I think it was the "Hughes ans Vale" case, taken to the high court in London about 1967, that finally undid the states. There is some interesting reading in old Truck and Bus magazines in the 50`s but mainly 60`s of articles about blokes getting nailed,or the lengths they went to,to get around it all.The government was protecting the rail because they owed a big bucket of money to the Poms because they had to borrow it to build the "efficient" rail network.

Here U go
a snipit of sum words

Australia is a federation that relies on the constitution to divide power between the federal government, states and territories. As the Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act did not specify powers of control over road transport it effectively relinquished full jurisdiction of such reforms to the states and territories.

This journey took 11 days, 2 days quicker than a parcel mailed at the same time and carried by rail.

Their purpose was to challenge the validity of the New South Wales State Transport Act against

Hey Teddles next time your talking to ol Ray Gilleland ask him about Hughes and Vale he ran out of their service station way back then just to the north of the harbour bridge in SYD if I remember correctly.

I think they had given up trucking by then but you'd have to ask him for the full details. 8-)
