Just a couple of questions about these Grey Ghosts. Were they specifically ordered by transport companies or were they stock built with no specific orders?

I take it the companies who operated them left them in their original grey paint?

I guess another way of asking the question is why were they painted in German Racing Silver rather than the company colours who ordered them?

There was a reason, which escapes me at the moment, but I I think it was Wally’s Shapowloffs choice.

... Well ... Originally thepu were ordered by Walter Shapowloff for he company Kwikasair ...
They were just standard Kenworths ... You could spec them with almost any driveline combo .. ol Wally just ordered as fast of a diff ratio as was possible for the time.

TNT took over Kwikasair soon after and continued to buy the same ... Albeit with slightly slower diff ratio.

The GRS paint (and lack of distinct company name/logo) is said to have been to used so that the truck were fairly nondescript going down the road.

The story goes ... Reg Ansett got quite upset that he could never tell which TNT division a particular truck was ... The plan worked very well ... When a complaint or such other matter arose.

TNT then began using the coloured triangles for different divisions ... Then finally used their TNT colours instead of GRS

Old boss bought a cab over prime mover in the early days, 871 with what he called 93 mph diffs.
Had 2 small trucks before then, ambition was to own one good one. Pleased he got it.
Possibly shown on the old build/order sheets,
the late O A Anders of Warrnambool.
