I met a couple at the Bright Adventure Film Festival a couple of years ago. They had a really unusual 4x4 "buggy" they had driven around the world. When they were travelling from North to South America they were blocked by Costa Rica which under no circumstances will allow right hand drive vehicles to enter.

Old mate took a leaf out of your book. He removed the steering wheel and stuck a broom stick into it. Then he clamped a pair of vice grips to the steering column.

As they drove in the line through the passport/customs check point his wife on the left "steered" the car with the broom handle clamped to the floor by her feet. He meanwhile operated the pedals and steered with the vice grips all covered with a large map he was studying. Down the road they put the wheel back and had no more troubles.

Swishy, definitely not a professional job. A professional would have the vice grips mounted facing in opposite directions.

I can't think of any reason to do that. I reckon it's snapped right where the lower leaves end. Quite a weird setup, to me at least. I've only seen springs with increasingly shorter leaves, not all the same length plus a main. (unless there's something else I'm missing).

Volvo did this for an ad many years ago where the car slalomed around dead Yankey vehicles on a salt lake.

As the ad was for right hand drive Countries they faked the "driver" driving whilst the passenger steered a wheel the size of a soup bowl.
