Totally irrelevant but, hoof is singular, hooves is plural (and there are four of them).
But the online dictionary I consulted only considers hoofer and hoover as a noun. So not in this context.
Even with hoofer the example is a dancer; but they don't actually have hooves anyway, and they would be plural (one-legged dancer anyone?), so not a hoof!
I guess that makes one of you correct. But which?

They were named after Herbert Hoover, the American president at the time who was widely (but falsely) claimed to be responsible for the terrible conditions during the Great Depression.
