In the Doctor Do-little story of many years ago, there was a goat-like animal that had a head at each end.  It was called a Push-me-Pull-you.  Maybe this is where the idea for this came from.

I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,

Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

I have been trying to find a picture of a complete Howard Shunting Tractor. There was one sold at the Museum sale in Cowra. While it had a bonnet on one end both ends had headlights. The driver's seat was a wooden bench, or more correctly 2, one front and one rear of the cab, with a vertical steering wheel between them. It was set up so you looked out the window above the bench seat facing you. I can't remember the setup of the other controls. The NSW Railways brought most of them. Unfortunately all the photos I have found have been of incomplete, rusted out, wrecks

Having lived through a pandemic I now understand all the painting of fat people on couches!

The American Coleman company built a lot of airport tugs with two of the Chevy/GMC advanced design cabs mounted back to back like that. I can Not find a picture right off???

Thanks for the photo but that's not the style I am thinking of.  The one I saw had the steering going straight down through the floor and a very square cab with bench seats facing each other. I am sttll trying to find a photo of one.  The sign said it had a 2nd gearbox for direction which gave 4 speeds either way and 4 wheel steering
