Actually,I think the 80 s recession killed them all...............Mack would have gone too ,except for the French Govt pouring in money...............those here who dont remember the 80 s recession..........it was nasty........streets in industrial areas every building with a 'For Sale" sign..............IH here were trying to sell three years old unsold stock, even in 1985...They went broke in 83,and were partially bailed out by the Victorian government, who bought the Geelong factory for cash ,then auctioned it off for about half the outlay.......finally the Vic taxpayers footed the bill personally, when Kennet levied each property with a lumpsum tax payment to reduce debt...........I reckon some on this forum would remember that.

John

If you read "International Harvester Trucks" The Complete Story by Patrick Foster recently published you will see how the UAW brought a successful company to its knees. Not the only manufacturer to be crippled by the union during the 80 period. They did not learn their lesson and ruined Navistar, which had arisen out of the ashes, as well a few years later.

The Australian operation obviously suffered the knock-on effect of the US parent troubles.

The above book is a great read with lots of photos.
