I have my shoulder to the wheel,
my nose to the grindstone,
I've put my best foot forward,
I've put my back into it,
I'm gritting my teeth,
Now I find I can't do any work in this position!

VicHung,
I don't envy you even a little bit when you are winding that "Big M" around the Land of the Long White Cloud!!
It would be OK down Highway One but I would not like to take it through the various gorges.
I don't think it would fit on the road from Gisborne (or is it Wairoa?) to Waikaremoana and beyond. It least not when the road was like it was 60 years ago when I was a passenger with my Sister, sitting on the tray of my Parents' Morris 8 Ute!!..Our Parents ran the general store at Kaitawa, the workers camp/village for the construction of the big new dam on Lake Waikaremoana.
And they call it "The good old days"!!!
Morris.

Hello mactaylor
I will leave it for VicHung to correct me , it is my understanding the reason for the twin steer is that it affords some additional payload at a lesser cost per Kilometre, this is due to the road tax system in NZ.
Now once again I may be corrected however when we delivered the components to some Wind Farms in NZ all our trucks and trailers were fitted with hub metres, we then purchased a distance on each of the hub metres for the loads we were carrying.
It was even more complicated by the fact that empty travel and loaded travel are different rates, anyway the final answer was that the twin steer could carry more weight for less road tax.

The B-train (B-double in Oz) is not a problem through the gorges, I take it through the Opotiki - Gisborne - Wairoa - Napier road often and have just come through the Waioeka Gorge twice today. I don't go through the road to Waikaremoana but know it well and it would be no problem. The big advantage of B-trains is that they track so well, perfect for our narrow winding roads. The first time I drove over that road was also 60 years ago, I was 16 and driving a Mk 1 Zephyr. Was that you in the Morris 8 that I cut off on one of the bad corners?
Rex
What you say was correct and although the rules have changed slightly in the last couple of years the basics are the same, we pay road user charges calculated by a hubmeter or electronic charging but there are now no different rates for loaded or unloaded trips.

Im home! Did not get any pictures, My wife refused to take any! Might have been a bit annoying sitting next to me all the time, with me saying "Twin steer, twin steer, twin steer". It seemed that on the B roads twin steer, quad dog was the go then major routes had B doubles and the like!
